Tree Talk Tuesday - Biochar Applications and Lifecycle in the Green Industry
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ET
Description: Biochar is charcoal made from biomass and used to enhance soil properties. Urban green waste is a perfect material for making biochar, allowing us to upcycle debris generated in tree care. Biochar provides permanent pore space in soil for water and air movement, microbial habitat, and storage of water and nutrients. Importantly, it is also so stable that it serves as a means of permanent carbon sequestration. It can also function as a very effective filter of pollutants in stormwater. This presentation will cover the science and application methods for biochar in the green industry and lay our a vision for how it can help solve some of our greatest challenges at different points in its lifecycle.
Presenter: Dr. Chris Fields-Johnson attended Virginia Tech, graduated Summa Cum Laude in forestry and received a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences while studying land reclamation, reforestation, and the use of biochar in soil rehabilitation. He is a Tree Conservation Specialist and Technical Advisor for the Davey Institute of the Davey Tree Expert Company, providing company-wide research, technical support, and training across the United States and Canada.
