Tree Talk Tuesday
Beech Leaf Disease
Ohio Chapter ISA Webinar
Title: Beech Leaf Disease
Description: Beech leaf disease (BLD) was originally discovered in Northeast Ohio in 2012 and has greatly expanded since its initial discovery. The number of BLD-positive counties has grown nearly exponentially in the last three years, including to six new states since 2020. We will review national beech leaf disease survey efforts through 2021 with guidance on how and where to perform surveys. To assist in collecting uniform BLD data, we developed Tree Health Survey, a smartphone app which provides training on symptom identification and data collection. Tree Health Survey is available to professionals and citizen-scientists, who have both been successful in reporting new occurrences of BLD. We will also highlight our newly established, long-term monitoring project. This project involves collaboration across multiple states and a significant collaboration with Canada to expand the study across the range of BLD. This project assesses multiple pests including beech leaf disease, Neonectria spp., and Cryptococcus fagisuga. Finally, we will discuss the effectiveness of chemical treatment on reducing BLD symptoms.
Presenter: Constance Hausman, Ph. D., Senior Conservation Science Manager Cleveland Metroparks
Bio: Constance has worked at Cleveland Metroparks since 2010 where her current work focuses on understanding the changes that occur in our natural areas due to forest pests/pathogens, climate change, habitat destruction, and invasive species to determine necessary forest management strategies. Prior to working with Cleveland Metroparks, she spent 6 years researching forest management strategies related to eradication efforts and ash tree mortality in emerald ash borer infested areas. She also serves on the state of Ohio’s Forestry Advisory Council.
