City Forester

Purpose of Position 
 

The city forester is responsible for the long-term care and management of city trees.  The city forester is responsible for the development and application of a comprehensive tree management plan including planting, pruning, and protecting and removal programs for public trees and associated vegetation.  The city forester provides training for city staff related to tree care and maintenance, oversees contracts for tree and landscape installations, conducts tree inventories and mapping, and develops and manages grants. 

Qualifications 

 
This position has a high degree of accountability. The incumbent for this position must have graduated from an accredited college, university, or technical college with a degree in Natural Resources, Forestry Management, Horticulture or related specialty.   Incumbent must possess a current ISA certification; however, an ISA Municipal Arborist certification is preferred.  Additionally, incumbent must possess a valid Ohio Pesticide/ Herbicide Applicators License or obtain this license within six months of hire.  
 
The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain an Ohio commercial driver’s license, Class B with Air Brake and Tanker endorsements within twelve months of employment.  Other requirements include the ability to maintain insurability under the city’s vehicle insurance policy.

The city forester effectively comprehends the technical aspects of a project in a quick manner, is capable of learning a new industry or product and uses rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems and to identify effective solutions. The city forester is a versatile learner open to change, is a team-player and encourages collaboration. He/she is cooperative and dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers, obtaining first-hand customer information to improve products and services, and maintaining effective relationships with customers gaining their trust and respect. When working with peers, the city forester can quickly identify common ground and solve problems representing his/her own interests while being fair to other groups.  
In conclusion, the city forester practices attentive and active listening, is capable of accurately restating an opinion of others even when he/she disagrees, and pursues everything with energy, optimism and drive especially in the face of resistance or setbacks. 
The 2017 hourly rate range for this full-time, non-exempt position is $23.34 to $29.47, depending upon experience.  New Albany offers a comprehensive benefit package. Looking for an arborist or anyone with a sales background, willing to train.  
Must be willing to work from 8 am to 6 pm - Monday through Friday.  Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm during peak season.
During the winter months we have the arborist or salesman do business development for the company.  The pay is strictly based on experience and willingness to work the hours we need during the busy season, including commission.

Tree Care Coordinator

Department: Education - Community Forester (050888)

Objective

Holden Forests and Gardens (Holden Arboretum and the Cleveland Botanical Garden) have an exciting new position in our Community Engagement Department.  The Tree Care Coordinator will guide community members and volunteers in the best tree care practices focused on arboricultural standards and the best urban forest management.   This will include outreach and education to a diverse cross section of organizations, professionals, and the public.

This position will also assist with implementing the Cleveland Tree Plan aimed at restoring Cleveland’s urban forest.  Planting purposefully for equity with partners is a priority with an emphasis on maintenance and establishment.  The tree care coordinator will acquire, plant, maintain, establish, inventory, and quantify the benefits of new trees while engaging community members in educational activities including outreach.

The Holden Arboretum – Kirtland, Ohio – less than 30 miles east of Cleveland.  Encompassing more than 3600 acres of cultivated gardens, woody plant collections and natural forested areas
Cleveland Botanical Gardens – located in the heart of University Circle
Holden Forests and Gardens is 12th largest public garden in the U.S. It is comprised of two campuses, Cleveland Botanical Garden and Holden Arboretum.
 
Responsibilities:

Meet with various community groups, parks, institutions and non-profits to discuss existing trees, planting sites, and best management practices
Perform various aspects of tree care including site selection and preparation, planting, pruning, mulching, watering, and weeding in the community
Assist with the installation and maintenance of trees in the community and at Holden as requested
Participate and support the Tree Steward and Arbor Care volunteers in the community and at Holden for ongoing maintenance of tree projects and displays
Support ongoing outreach and technical instruction on tree care including planting and maintenance with diverse communities at workshops
Assist with professional development classes focused on the tree care industry including certification, structural pruning, and tree worker safety
 
Qualifications

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in forestry, horticulture, or urban forestry, preferred.
Strong communication and organization skills
Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture, a plus
Passion for working collaboratively with community members and colleagues
Experience working with volunteers’ desirable
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing (accurate and concise), to the general public and specialized professional audiences
Ability to work with Holden staff, enlisting cooperation across program areas, and with outside parties, including collaborators and contractors, in all relevant areas
 
Requirements

Travel by automobile as necessary to attend meeting and events
Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record required to be covered on Holden Forests & Garden’s vehicle insurance policy
Must pass a criminal background check, credit and substance screening
 
Physical Demands

Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation:

Ascend/descend stairs on occasion and travel by foot on unpaved or uneven terrain to transport oneself to various location on arboretum property
Lift up to 40 pounds
Reach, kneel, bend and twist at waist, bend at knees, crouch, see, hear, touch, grasp objects, push, pull, sit
Willingness to participate in tree care across all seasons in varying conditions, primarily outdoors
 
Work Environment

Evening and weekend work as needed
Two-(2) year position with potential of continuing

AAA Tree & Landscaping LLC is now hiring for 3 tree climber positions.  Our company has served the Greater Dayton, OH area for over 20 years.  We are a       rapidly growing company and offer year-round employment.  We are presently offering a generous sign-on bonus and very competitive wages.  

The position is for M-F work, 7:30 am -3:30 pm, no weekends, no holidays, no travel.  Applicants must be drug free and have a minimum of two years   climbing experience.
