The 2010 Ohio Chapter ISA annual conference is set for February 14-16th at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.  This year’s theme is “Arboriculture…A Journey Not A Destination.”

Jeremy Barrell of Barrell Tree Consultancy (BTC) will headline the conference, presenting a keynote address entitled Climate Change and the Emerging Role of Arborists.  As the dramatic implications of global warming emerge, suddenly trees do matter, and the people that manage them are becoming influential.  Barrell will explore the rapid rise of trees up the list of urban management priorities and is optimistic that, although the future for the planet is grim, arborists will have an important role in easing the discomfort.

Other speakers in this year’s lineup include many recognizable names, including Roger Funk from The Davey Tree Expert Company, Todd Kramer from Kramer Tree Specialists and many others.

Returning in 2010 is “Breakfast with the Exhibitors” on Monday morning. Make sure to come early and get registered so you don’t miss this hot breakfast and a chance to get those early morning deals.

Sponsorship opportunities and exhibit space are still available for the conference.  Sponsorship packages range from $200 to $1,800.  Exhibitor space starts at $575 per space.

We look forward to an exciting meeting in February. Don’t miss the chance to network with fellow arborists.

Ohio Division of Forestry Seeks Input in
Developing a Statewide Forest Resource Assessment
Minimize

COLUMBUS, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry is conducting a statewide assessment of Ohio’s valuable ecological and economic forest resources, and wants your help. Public input is being requested on the key issues, threats and opportunities associated with Ohio’s woodland resources including forests on public and private lands, and urban and rural areas.
The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 requires each state to develop a forest resource assessment document. Results from this assessment will be used to develop directions and actions that the Ohio Division of Forestry, together with its partners, will take to promote and achieve sustainable use and protection of Ohio’s woodlands.

Details about the Forest Resource Assessment and Strategy and a downloadable stakeholder survey can be found on the division’s Web Site. You may request a written copy to be mailed to you by contacting Project Forester Cotton Randall at (614) 265-6667 or by sending an Email. Comments and completed surveys will be accepted until January 15, 2010.

The Web site contains information about five upcoming regional stakeholder meetings which will provide for additional public input.  Please RSVP to Cotton Randall if you plan to attend any of the following meetings:

  • Columbus ODNR Office-Fountain Square, 2045 Morse Road, Building E-1, January 5 from 1 - 4:30 p.m.
  • Athens ODNR Office, 360 E. State Street, January 7 from 1 - 4:30 p.m.
  • Dayton - Cox Arboretum, 6733 Springboro Pike, January 13 at 12:30 - 4 p.m.

Questions, comments and completed surveys may be turned in at any of the regional stakeholder meetings, emailed to Cotton Randall, or mailed to ODNR Division of Forestry at 2045 Morse Road, Building H-1, Columbus, OH 43229-6693.

The Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web Site.

Bacterial Leaf Scorch Found in Franklin County
ODNR to Conduct Statewide Survey
Minimize

Earlier this fall, a White Oak sample from a Franklin County community tested positive for Bacterial Leaf Scorch, Xylella fastidiosa.  Bacterial Leaf Scorch (BLS) is a chronic and eventually fatal disease that displays its most noticeable symptoms in late summer/early fall.  These symptoms include premature leaf browning, marginal necrosis, and defoliation.  The symptoms typically begin at the leaf margins and migrate to the midrib of the leaf.  The following year the tree leafs out normally, but leaves on a few more branches turn prematurely brown in late summer. This will be repeated over a period of years until the entire tree turns prematurely brown and dieback will occur.  Since this can be easily confused with other disorders, it is best to have the suspect tree tested by collecting samples.

Below are three Web sites to help you become more familiar with this disease:

US Forest Service
University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service
Alan Iskra, Forest Pathologist, USDA Forest Service

BLS is seriously affecting urban forests in New Jersey and Delaware, and because of the positive find in Franklin County, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Forestry will conduct a statewide BLS survey in late summer/early fall 2010.  Lisa Bowers, the Central Ohio Regional Urban Forester, who is temporarily helping the Forest Health Program, will coordinate this effort.  Because the time to collect leaf samples is quite narrow, Lisa will require help.  The samples that are collected will be sent off for specialized testing.  Sample packaging can be obtained through the ODNR Division of Forestry.  For now, if you have questions about the survey, please Email Lisa Bowers.
